Abstract

Tenses are one of the essential elements in English grammar that function to indicate the time when an event, action, or state occurs. An accurate understanding of tenses is necessary so that the message conveyed in verbal or written communication can be understood clearly and precisely. This article aims to help readers understand the basic concepts of tenses in English, covering the definition, types, function, and how to use them in various sentence contexts. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with a literature review approach. Data were obtained through the study of various reference sources in the form of grammar books, linguistic journals, and academic articles relevant to the discussion of tenses. The data were analyzed by grouping the types of tenses based on their time categories and grammatical aspects, then comparing their functions and usage in English sentences. The results of the discussion show that there are sixteen tenses in English, grouped into three main time categories (Present, Past, and Future) and four grammatical aspects (Simple, Continuous, Perfect, and Perfect Continuous). Each tense has a distinct structure and function according to the context of time and the meaning of the action. This discussion affirms that mastering tenses is not enough by simply memorizing formulas but also requires an understanding of the context and the relationship between events in a sentence. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of tenses can improve the accuracy and effectiveness of English usage in various communication situations.
