THE HISTORY OF RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN THE MIDDLE AGES FROM THE CRUSADES TO THE PROTESTANT REFORMATION

Abstract

Religious conflict in the Middle Ages emerged as the result of a complex interaction between spiritual interests and political ambition. This was clearly evident in the series of the Crusades as well as the decline of the Catholic Church's internal authority during that period. The irregularities of the ecclesiastical structure and the misuse of authority encouraged the birth of the Reformation movement, which was later initiated by figures such as Martin Luther and John Calvin. These developments brought about major changes in the direction of religious and political life in Europe, making an in-depth study of this dynamic essential to understanding the transformative process that occurred. This research focuses on elucidating the causal factors, development patterns, and historical impact of religious conflict from the era of the Crusades until the emergence of the Protestant Reformation. The study employs a qualitative approach through a literature review, specifically by examining historical sources, scholarly writings, and other relevant literature using descriptive-analytical analysis. The research findings indicate that religious tension during that time was primarily influenced by the struggle for religious and political authority, which culminated in major events such as the Crusades and the Reformation. Overall, these conflicts were a series of historical processes involving interconnected theological, political, and social aspects, which ultimately divided the Christian world into two main currents. The subsequent impact not only changed the structure of church institutions but also accelerated the birth of social and political changes that became an important foundation for the formation of modern Europe.
