Abstract

The pedagogical competence of Islamic Religious Education teachers in designing and implementing deep learning is a primary challenge at the elementary school level. This study aims to analyze the transformation of the academic supervision model from a conventional, inspection-based approach to a coaching-based model as a strategy to enhance the pedagogical competence of PAI teachers at SD Negeri 020259 Binjai. Using an exploratory case study qualitative approach, data were collected through in- depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The findings indicate that coaching- based supervision, which emphasizes a partnership relationship, critical reflection, and teacher empowerment, is effective in identifying and addressing gaps in pedagogical competence, particularly in designing learning oriented toward higher-order thinking skills and the contextual internalization of Islamic values. The implementation of this model requires enhancing the supervisor's capacity as a coach, modifying supervision instruments to be more reflective, and fostering a collaborative culture within the school environment. This transformation has the potential to establish a cycle of continuous improvement, ultimately leading to the enhancement of more meaningful PAI learning quality for students.
